Hearing on GMO labeling
On Tuesday, January 26 a House committee will hold a public hearing on a bill to require labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs).
The bill, HB 1674, would only go into effect one year after Vermont’s GMO labeling law goes into effect. Vermont law will require GMO labeling starting July 1, but the law is facing challenges at the state and national level.
In particular, the U.S. Senate is considering a bill that would forbid states from issuing GMO labeling requirements.
HB 1674 includes several arguments in favor of GMO labeling.
“Labeling is necessary to ensure that New Hampshire consumers are fully and reliably informed about the products they purchase and consume,” states the bill.
Opponents of GMO labeling counter that science has found no negative health effects from consuming GMOs, so labeling creates unnecessary stigma.
Others argue that labeling requirements should only be set at the national level, or else food producers will struggle to comply with a patchwork of state laws.
The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. in LOB303 at the Statehouse in Concord.
