Bobcat hunting in NH?

On Wednesday, October 14 the Fish and Game Commission voted to consider bobcat hunting and trapping seasons in New Hampshire.

In 1989 New Hampshire closed bobcat hunting and trapping because the bobcat population fell below 200.

Recent estimates from UNH put the bobcat population around 1,000.

Supporters of a bobcat hunting season point out that Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont already offering bobcat hunting.

They argue a very limited number of permits from the Fish and Game Department would have no long-term impact on the bobcat population.

Opponents of a bobcat hunting season argue that New Hampshire’s ecology lacks predators, and the state should still do everything in its power to protect the bobcat population.

Other opponents argue that bobcat hunting is unethical because bobcats are generally not killed for food, and their pelts may be sold as trophies.

A bobcat season will face several public hearings before moving forward.

Thomas

It is unconscionable to hunt bobcats in NH simply because their population is finally strong and to hunt them as trophies and to sell their fur.  I have already written to our state senator regarding this issue and hope that the legislature will have some input in preventing this horrendous practice.
