Assisted suicides in NH?
In Maine and in other states, debates are ongoing regarding legislation that, if passed, would allow assisted suicide.
In Vermont where such legislation has passed, physicians can legally prescribe life-ending medications to hasten the deaths of ill patients with a life expectancy of 6 months or less.
Supporters of assisted suicide argue that it enables ill persons to die with dignity and avoid unnecessary pain and suffering. Many also indicate it is an individual's personal right to decide when to end his/her life.
Opponents, however, contend that assisted suicide is morally wrong. Others express concern that it endangers the weak and vulnerable and corrupts the doctor–patient relationship.
In Maine, Gov. LePage said he plans to veto a bill currently moving through the Legislature that would allow physicians to help terminally ill patients hasten their deaths.
