“Should towns be allowed to exempt all permanently and totally disabled veterans from paying property taxes?”
Discussion held on Citizens Count NH website and Facebook page February 11, 2018
Yes: 107 citizens were in favor of allowing towns to exempt permanently and totally disabled veterans from paying property taxes.
- “Yes. They have sacrificed more than most will ever know. That is a nice way of thanking them for that sacrifice.”
- “They did their duty, lost the ability to work … Fair, especially on a town-by-town basis.”
- “It's very simple. If a city or town wants to so and the residents want to do so then they should be allowed to.”
No: 17 citizens were opposed to towns to exempt permanently and totally disabled veterans from paying property taxes.
- “No… Make no mistake, we want all these dedicated patriotic veterans taken care of but the feds and the Department of Defense have all the money and that's where it should come from.
- “No. Nothing special about the military, pay taxes like everyone else.”
- “Absolutely not. Property taxes pay for services that you use.”
Other: 19 citizens addressed their comments to related questions and issues.
These included some alternative proposals:
- “I think everyone should be exempt from property tax from the age of 65. By then I think you have paid your debt to society!”
- “Towns should scrap property taxes altogether since they are a tax on something you already own.”
