Position on Issues

"It is pretty clear at this point that the opioid epidemic has hit families of New Hampshire particularly hard. We need reliable funding and smart evidence-based policy in order to fight this disease. It is not enough to simply provide a 28-day program focused on addressing the physical aspects of the disease.

"These are elementary steps on the way to recovery without an end game. We need a wholistic approach that works to provide treatment for the individual struggling and their family. This starts with access to affordable healthcare. Next, we need counseling and educational peer group coaching that gets our friends and loved ones on a healthy road to recovery and back into the workforce. This process needs to be lasting and ambitious in its goals. We need to come together as a community of families looking out standing up for one another.

"We need more health care workers in this field, an increase in our recovery infrastructure, and we need to treat this as a medical condition rather than a criminal situation. The Governor would be better served by committing the resources needed to provide a whole range of services instead of calling on others to do the work for him. We need so much more than what we are currently getting from Concord."

"Currently 53,000 of our fellow Granite Staters are scraping by, living at or near the federal poverty level. The uninsured rate in New Hampshire was lowered by 43% since the Affordable Care Act was passed in March of 2010. Tom believes that we should build upon the successes of the ACA and address the elements of our Health Care system still in need of practical common since solutions. Tom also believes that it is imperative that we consistently reauthorize Medicaid Expansion in New Hampshire for the sake of the young, under employed, and those 53,000 New Hampshire neighbors struggling to overcome poverty."

"According NHPR New Hampshire graduates rack up more student loans than anywhere else in the country. We export more college graduates than almost any other state. http://nhpr.org/term/student-debt#stream/0

"We should pursue loan forgiveness opportunities for graduates, creating incentives for students to stay in New Hampshire and engage in public service. We need to find ways to better support our university system to educate and train our workforce. We need programs that turn out innovative entrepreneurs and skilled workers to match the demand of our future workforce needs."

"Clean and renewable sources of energy are not just idealized dreams of the future. They are working and necessary elements of our everyday life. Both wind and solar powered energy sources are effectively being utilized throughout every region of the country. There is a global, sustainable, movement occurring throughout the world to ensure that this planet remains habitable for generations to come. The clean air, water and skies that we can appreciate in New Hampshire are not infinite in their abundance. Society's actions since the industrial revolution has contributed its fair share to the quickening depletion of our natural resources."

"The issue of negotiations between labor and management is, by its nature, very difficult and historically one-sided with the advantage heavily weighted on the side of management. Workers need strong and effective representation. 'Right to Work' legislation essentially pits individual employee against the full negotiating might and leverage of an entire company and that of its shareholders. Working families in New Hampshire must stand together and protect the right of their fellow employees. The absence of this right and the corporate assault on organized labor has been one of the largest drivers of the hollowing out of the American middle class."

"There is widespread agreement among Granite Staters for lawmakers to enact commonsense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of those that are criminally violent, or at risk of harming themselves or those around them. We need universal background checks, which most law abiding responsible gun owners in New Hampshire already have."

"Tom is against school vouchers that take money away from our public schools. As your state senator, he will fight to make sure our kids get the best teachers, the best facilities, and the best education to prepare them for the challenges of the twenty-first century."
