"We have an economic obligation not only to provide for ourselves but to invest in generations now and to come. We have a collective responsibility to finance our public schools in a fair and equitable way. It is for those reasons that I'm inclined to support a state income tax, but, if and only if, it is structured in such a way so as not to become just another tax. It must be designed so that it will remove and replace the unfair tax burden currently in place on families and businesses. I have some ideas on restructuring, but they're much too detailed to be outlined here. I am unalterably opposed to a further extension of the sales tax."

"I believe it's time that we engage in an empirical experiment. I would support building one and only one, non-hotel casino in the northern part of our state, appropriately designed to blend-in with the environment of the Great North Woods. We can then see for ourselves how it goes. After a reasonable period of time, we can make an informed decision about the future of casino gambling in our state."

"Education makes us better people. It is the means by which we sustain our democratic way of life. It's education, not guns, that keeps us free. It liberates us from the narrowness of ignorance and broadens our prospects for a better life. Investment in our public schools has enormous returns. It has the potential, as proved after WW II, to create an economically viable middle class that benefits us all. It's education that provides opportunities leading to productive and happy lives. We have an economic obligation not only to provide for ourselves but to invest in generations now and to come. We have a collective responsibility to finance our public schools in a fair and equitable way.
