Candidate's Website, 2015

Chafee has not shared a clear position on Common Core. On his website he says, "When the mandate to mainstream special education students was enacted in 1973, the federal government promised the pay for 40% of the additional cost to local education districts. Forty-two years later, Congress has only authorized 16% of the cost. ...I would put programs such as Race to the top, common core and charter schools as a lesser priority until the additional billions in federal support to local school districts is in place."

"I believe the best way to build a good strong economy -- and I had to do it as governor because I came in during the depths of the Great Recession with people losing their jobs and their houses to foreclosure -- the best way to build it back up is the foundation....good pre-K programs, good elementary schools, good high schools. What the government has to do is build infrastructure, make sure we have good roads and bridges, fiber optics, dams, ports. Those are the foundations of a good economy."

Other, 2015
