Should the federal government ban certain "military-style" firearms, such as the AR-15?

"Absolutely. I support the well-researched positions of https://everytownresearch.org on this matter."

Do you support abolishing any federal agencies or departments?

"I believe we should modernize some departments that have become outdated and need updating. For example, we should combine the Department of Education and the Department of Labor into a new Department of Talent. We believe that streamlining operations in the organizational chart of the federal government is the way forward. With a nimble set of highly effective agencies, we will become best prepared to tackle both America's needs today and its challenges tomorrow."

Do you support a constitutional amendment limiting terms for U.S. representatives and senators?

"Five-in-six Americans favor a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Members of Congress. I would limit House members to six terms (12 years) and Senators to three terms (18 years)"

Should the U.S. send military forces to Taiwan if China attacks the island?

"The United States has no mutual defense treaty with Taiwan, as we do with Japan and South Korea. Since 1979, multiple Presidents have pursued a strategy of 'strategic ambiguity' with regards to U.S. Taiwan policy, which means the U.S. won't support Taiwan declaring complete independence from China, so long as China refrains from seizing it by force. The U.S. should continue the current policy and not over-extend ourselves and try to be the world's policeman. The current peace can be maintained by following the same strategy that has worked for the past fifty years."

Do you support a federal rule that would oblige automakers to make 50% or more of the vehicles they sell electric?

"Although it extremely important for America to evolve from a gasoline-based economy to an electric economy when it comes to automobiles, a federal rule mandating over-production of electric vehicles is not the right way to spur this change. Instead we should increase incentives for individuals, businesses and government to buy electric vehicles. I would instead propose a $15,000 tax credit for buying a fully electric vehicle and a $7,500 tax credit for buying a hybrid."

Do you support ending China's Permanent Normal Trade Relations status?

"China is an emerging superpower in our multi-polar world. Too many politicians are rushing to try and start a new Cold War with China. This is not in our best interests. Instead, we need to engage with China, offering economic benefits in order to move them towards becoming a more democratic society, more respectful of human rights. We can also contain Beijing's expansionism with economic levers. My administration will be in favor of smartly limiting Chinese exports and imports for national security reasons and to protect vital U.S. industries like computer chips. My administration will be diplomacy-first, and focused on building a smart relationship with China that protects vital American interests without leading to a new Cold War."

Do you support increasing oil and natural gas leases on publicly owned land and water?

"America is already one of the world's largest producers of oil and natural gas. We do not need to open up more lands to drilling. We need to charge higher, market-rate prices on the lands that are already available for pumping."

Should the federal government limit certain firearm purchases to residents over age twenty-one?

"As a father, I am personally saddened that gun violence has become the leading cause of death for America's children and teens. These deaths are unacceptable and preventable. The gun industry rakes in approximately $9 billion annually, with large percentages of those revenues coming from semi-automatic weapons that far exceed the intended protections of the 2nd Amendment. I've read that almost 400 million civilian-owned firearms exist in the United States. I am pro-liberty in terms of the right of adult Americans to own guns for personal protection, rifles for hunting, or other reasonable access. But with gun ownership comes great responsibility, therefore I am in favor of significant reform in this area to reduce gun violence. Gun violence kills more than 40,000 people in America and wounds twice as many every year. We can and must do better for all, especially for our innocent children."

Should the U.S. build a physical wall between Mexico and the U.S.?

"I see the wall as a costly and ineffective symbol of intolerance which won't do much to reduce illegal border crossings. Instead, I am in favor of dramatically increasing judges in border states to quickly adjudicate asylum claims. In 2023, more than 2.5 million migrants attempted to cross the U.S./Mexico border, but our laws only allow 125,000 asylees per year. Right now it takes more than two years for each migrant to be seen by a judge (and the line keeps getting longer). We need this time to be reduced to less than one month, and migrants crossing the border need to know that 95% of them will not be accepted. In addition, we need to completely overhaul our non-asylum immigration laws to create a talent-based immigration system that efficiently welcomes new Americans who pledge to fully embrace our ideals, contribute to our economy, and aspire toward the American Dream. This will require a complete rewrite of our nation's immigration laws to be more like the laws of Australia and Canada."

Do you support using military force against drug cartels inside Mexico?

"Although the flow of narcotics from Mexico is deeply concerning, I am not in favor of using American military force inside Mexico to address the problem. While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has reported that nearly 80,000 Americans died from opioid-related overdoses in 2022, our concern for fentanyl cannot overshadow our value that we should not be the world's policeman. At the moment such drug trafficking crosses our border, however, that is where we should invest more funds and do as much policing as possible. I also strongly support addressing America's addiction crisis as an opportunity to support mental health, not imprisoning those who are suffering from addiction."

Should the U.S. government continue to provide military aid to Ukraine (without putting U.S. soldiers on the ground)?

"In 2021, Russia invaded Ukraine without provocation. The parallels between Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Nazi Germany's invasion and annexation of German-speaking Austria, Czechoslovakia, and then Poland (1939) are eerily similar. Very few remember this history, but it is very important to understand. Both eras were preceded by a weakening of democracy, aided and accelerated by mass-media technology that facilitated the rise of authoritarian strongmen. In the 1930s, this was driven by new mass-media technologies of radio and TV. Over the past decade, the rise of populist authoritarian leaders in our era has been driven by new social media and partisan TV news. In both cases, strong militaristic leaders invaded neighboring countries under the pre-text of unifying people who wanted to rejoin their former Homeland because they spoke the same language and had the same heritage. In Germany's case, Austria was (and is) a German-speaking neighbor and both Czechoslovakia and Poland had (and still have) German-speaking regions, exactly like how Crimea and the Donbas region of Ukraine are Russian-speaking territories today. When Russia previously invaded Georgia, that neighbor also has Russian speaking areas. So why should we care about Ukraine, a country that is far away from the U.S. and seemingly has nothing to do with us? Well, in the 1930s, when Germany was allowed to attack its neighbors, appeasement by world powers at the time indirectly led to Japan invading its neighbors, and Italy engaging in expansionist wars too. Similarly, now, China may invade Taiwan and is pursuing expansionist policies on all its borders. Democracy is declining around the world. As a student of international relations history, the parallels are way too similar to ignore. So why should American citizens care? Before and during World War II, the world suffered a world-wide depression as all countries increased trade barriers and became increasingly isolationist. President Trump called for a big increase in protectionist tariffs on all foreign imports, and historically authoritarians have always pursued the same type of Homeland-first policies. This also parallels increased tariffs and protectionism in the 1930s that spurred the long global recession before World War II. Very few people who were alive in the 1930s are here to warn us in the 2020s. History does repeat itself. Humankind has seen this movie before. We must not stay silent and repeat the same mistakes. We must aid Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, but we must not commit American troops, and we must work with Ukraine and our European allies to keep the costs of this support reasonable while we educate the American people on why it is so important to the future of the world."
