Should NH use taxpayer money to build a memorial to the Old Man?
"There are far better, more innovative and more organic ways to memorialize the iconic natural rock formation in the No. White Mtns. which came to be known as "The Old Man In The Mountain". Idea 1: Formulate (and yes - fund w/ public monies, as well as private donations) a new NH artist's collaborative, the objective & theme of which is to create inspired & novel works that each in their own way help to capture the spirit and nature of this thing we call New Hampshire, and of living in NH. Include artist's contributions from many visual mediums. Orchestrate careful adjudication so as to select the highest-ranking works in each medium for display. Create a permanent artist's gallery/display space either in Concord, or in Franconia, or both, which features and exhibits these creations as a human homage to what nature chose to share with we, the people of NH, for so long - that being the "Old Man...". Idea 2: Wait for nature to give us a new and different icon. Allow nature to speak to us, the residents/admirers of our unique state, in her own time, no matter how long it takes. Celebrate with photojournalism all that which occurs here naturally in the meantime. Publish the images. Idea 3: Fund and slap together some contrived, hasty and synthesized version of what the past has given us naturally (vis-a-vis: "The Old Man...") while ignoring the fact that the future of NH, her identity, and yes - her icons, are not only unknown and unwritten, but are for NH and her people to decide."
