SB 523 (2024)

Require school board policy, complaint procedure for harmful material

Summary:

Prohibits K-12 schools from making "any material that is harmful to minors" available to students. The bill defines this material to include various content related to sex. This bill also requires school boards to adopt complaint resolution policies to address complaints regarding harmful material by parents or guardians. Lastly, this bill requires vendors of library materials to use a rating system for "sexually relevant material."

The Senate amended the bill. The new bill requires local school boards to adopt a policy describing materials authorized for use by students in the district. Districts must also implement a complaint procedure for material that is harmful or age-inappropriate. The bill lays out certain requirements for the complaint procedure, such as the timeline to respond to a complaint.
