HB 1292 (2024)
Let children up to age 25 enroll on parent's state retiree health insurance, require some local cooperation with immigration enforcement
Eliminates the requirement for children of retirees, aged 19 to 25, to maintain full-time student status to qualify for coverage under the State of NH retiree health benefit program.
The Senate amended the bill to add the text of SB 563. That bill prohibits state and local governments from adopting "sanctuary policies," which prohibit or impede law enforcement cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.
A conference committee of representatives and senators agreed to more narrowly tailor the language of the bill. According to a written summary by Rep. Terry Roy, "The language in the bill now only requires law enforcement to honor criminal detainers that are discovered subsequent to someone being arrested for a violation of New Hampshire law. Furthermore, the language specifically prohibits law enforcement from questioning people about their immigration status. ... As stated, the bill only prohibits towns from ordering their law enforcement to ignore requests from immigration to either notify or temporarily hold someone already in custody who is wanted by immigration."
